That was pretty harsh, DW. Standing Fast has some legitimate concerns. The technology is new and there will be some problems. Little kids on bikes turning in front of driverless cars, dogs and cats getting flattened in driveways and runaway DL cars crashing into walls.
That said, I think that just as every airplane crash is studied and remedies and improvements are implemented, the industry will become remarkably safe over time.
I'm excited about it. Can't wait for Walmart to deliver my jock rash spray, quality tank tops made in Bangladesh, and 12 packs of Bud Lite.

Well, even driverless vehicles will have to be insured against liability claims in case of accidents, etc. And who will be responsible? The company that owns the vehicle? The company sold the vehicle? The company that made the vehicle? And how shall the premiums be set?

I read in the newspaper and online of accidents caused by driverless vehicles. The things that can go wrong that seem a no-brainer to me have not been anticipated by designers and engineers. Many are fatalities caused entirely by failure of the vehicle to respond appropriately to the situation.

Besides which, driverless vehicles deprive people of honest labor. The only reason Uber, Google and other outfits are interested in them is because they do not need to pay a human being to operate it. I can see how they might come in handy for elderly people who can no longer drive, but once you are in the little machine, you are at its mercy. What if its computer system fails? How will you get out?

I think the DMV is doing the right thing to establish very high standards. The purpose of government, after all, is to protect the lives, liberty, property and happiness of the people. If driverless cars are let loose on our streets and highways, I think accidents will increase accordingly.

No, I am not against new technology. I am against ignorance and stupidity.
