The NRA likes to tout they will oppose unfair or infringing gun laws. When are they going to put some real money behind getting an initiative on the ballot to force California into becoming a "shall issue" state? Where, besides Illinois and Washington DC, is my membership and donation money going to?

Oh, also a word to the wise. If you are a gun owner - NEVER transport that registered gun across state lines even if you have a permit to carry it in California unless you know the gun laws of the particular state you intend to visit. I've read about out-of-staters with gun permits and unloaded, registered and secured firearms getting busted in NYC for illegal possession of firearms in checked baggage @ JFK or LaGuardia. The unwary are getting busted at tourist traps like the Empire State Building that screens visitors upon entry. The naive tourists openly advise the security screeners that they want to check their firearm at the door (in a lockbox) before going on the tour. Security calls NYPD and the rest is history. It was reported that one guy with a completely clean criminal history spent 2 days in a NYC jail before he could bail. And once convicted he could spend more time there. What a nightmare.

I read that December saw record sales for guns in the US. There were 1.5M background checks requested for gun sales in December up to Christmas day. For the first 11 months of 2011 there were 14.6M requests for gun sales background checks - a full 70% higher than in 2003. In 2010 (another record year) there were 14.4M gun sales background checks. Total for 2011 is expected to exceed 16M.

Some speculate the reasons for the increased sales: 1) Fear of economic collapse 2) Fear of higher crime and lack of police protection 3) Fear of more government restrictions on firearm purchases.

Nobody claimed the gun sales were due to an increased interest in rabbit hunting.

One thing is clear. People are spooked. And the numbers don't lie.

They can create rules to restrict access to weapons in public. But they can't prohibit people from protecting themselves and their families.

Bob: Yes it is -- generally. Unless it's for a business in another county. Then it's good only for that county:
