A couple of thoughts...
I have know MG Baldwin since 1994. When I met him, he was a CPT. Hard nosed, wicked smart, and has always been a kick ass and take names kind of guy. Make no bones about it, he will gather the data, make an assessment, consult with the subject matter experts, and then act. I told him while he was a young Major, that he will be a General Officer some day. He is that smart folks! As a battalion commander, I watched him track an entire battle to include phase line crossings by each company commander, times, locations, enemy actions, break downs in communication, etc. and do it with relative ease! It was an amazing thing to watch inside the TOC (Tactical Operations Center) I have been a member of the CALGUARD for 20+ years and this is the guy we need.

The CALGUARD has been fraught with turmoil, nepotism, corruption, good ol' boy networks, gays/lesbians, secret societies, failure to implement standards, exceptions to exceptions for the few, and on and on. MG Baldwin is good, but the Army "DON'T ISSUE NO MAGIC WANDS". BG Miller is pouting and just pissed off that her reign is over. She wears her "first woman" general title like she wears her socks. She had her eye on being the first woman TAG and now that dream is over. Disgruntled and pissed at the world, just like society today, someone has to be to blame. Complete and utter failure to accept responsibility for her role in the Recruiting debacle that plagues the CAARNG today. Here is some Kleenex Char... pound sand! And get rid of your winey ass website already.

Mr. Charles Piller - I am convinced he was bullied and pounded into oblivion by every jock on any campus he ever went to. His stories are so far from factually correct his "talent" would be best served at TMZ or National Inquirer. He has "just enough" facts to be dangerous. His articles are so detrimental and harmful to the organization as a whole he should be drawn and quartered. His inability to "investigate" and wait until he get the facts right is only shadowed by his desire to see his name posted below a headline. This guy would have been locked up or deported during Hoover's reign; as a communist subverter trying to destroy America.

CPT Clark - Really guy? "Hello, Im Clark, former FBI agent and U.S. Secret Service officer, and i'm no stranger to fighting white-collar crimes." Over and over and over again. Go back to school, get a degree, and get a life. Your five minutes of fame are over. You should be prosecuted for release of confidential information to the press.

Let MG Baldwin run the CAL GUARD. Let him assess, formulate a plan, get people in place, and then execute the plan. Stop harassing the guy every five seconds with a new scandal. If you have him chasing unicorns and leprechauns all day long, how is he supposed to do his job. If he is placing people that he knows, trusts, and can get the job done, SO WHAT! I know for a fact that this guy has bumped into many great officer's along his career path. He remembers their names, abilities, and skill sets. He is very keen at putting the good ones into play at the precise moment that he needs them. The others, he places (metaphorically) on a shelf for a later day. When the time is right, he goes to the shelf, dusts them off... and puts them into play. I can attest to many of key personnel appointments. They are smart, capable, driven, dedicated, and yes... while some of them may have a skeleton or two... NO ONE IS IMPERVIOUS TO A SKELETON OR TWO. But these Officers are the right people.

Again... This is a great leader. A good man. And never ever forget... HE IS TALENTED AND MOST OF ALL WICKED SMART!

It is obvious that only Longrider has an inkling of what the CANG is for. State militias are at the heart of preserving the security of states rights. The "kick associated and name taking" style is what is needed here. His admission of his wife's complicity in wrong doing is a good start to showing that he has what it will take to make the Guard right. Kick as many assessment as you deem necessary, General Baldwin.

The Cal Guard State Headquarters has had serious problems with the "culture" described in the article for a long time. My position on correcting this issue has been (since 1974) that napalm is required in vast quantities. The Brigadier, by the way, epitomizes the "entitlement culture" Baldwin has been charged to fix. Since he is a recent combat veteran and understands what will be required of Guardsmen and Women deployed to combat areas, Baldwin is more likely to be able adjust the HQ headspace to serve them better than someone who has grown up in the old order. He will, necessarily, bring in people who support him and whom he can trust.

Not all State National Guard HQs have the problems that plague the California Headquarters. And eliminating the National Guard would only serve to strip the States of resources that cannot be provided by the Active Services and their "Reserves" under public law. The Guard has proved time and again its value in wartime and in civil emergency/disaster situations. Baldwin deserves a shot at fixing the Guard HQ, for the sake of the people who serve in the Cal Guard, and the people of the State of California.

His wife works as a contractor? He is part of the problem. He and his wife don't talk! REALLY? People "retire" from civil service and if they are "good ol' boy's or girls", they are hired back into the same job as "state active duty" (usually higher pay) or they are hired back AGR which pluses up your NG retirement greatly(365 points a year compared to about 63 points a year). What about the other states?, what about NGB?, MASSIVE WASTE every where. Trust me this guy is only putting his "people" in place, at least thats what I saw during my 32 years in the Guard in two different states. Hopefully I'm wrong but I doubt it.

Have you ever noticed that the ones who are supposed to represent the epitome of integrity, honesty and good character in America are generally the most corrupt? The educated ones. I think it was Will Rogers who said "Education never helped morals. The most savage people are the most moral. The smarter the guy the bigger the rascal".

Surely you've heard the phrase "the fish rots from the head" before, eh?

Stand back for a second and examine what is happening in your political offices, military (exec levels) and police departments.

It's not the little people who are destroying this Empire.
