Earl Warren was one of the greatest leaders this state has ever had...he helped start the very first Public Defenders office in the state and country in Alameda County, he was also the DA in Alameda and of course was the main force behind the constitutionally protected rights we have today in criminal procedure as CJ of the SCOTUS.

He also regretted his actions against the Japanese....as well he should as it is an incredibly illegal act, and to think it happened in basicaly modern times is scary.

Steve: At the O.C. Register after 9/11, our editorials, many by me, opposed any attacks on Muslims, or violations of their civil rights. We also opposed the Bush-Obama wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, etc., which have killed hundreds of thousands of Muslims (as well as Christians and others). We favored going after Osama bin Laden because he blew up our buildings, but not of the other actions by Bush-Obama. We proudly upheld R.C. Hoiles' libertarian legacy of defending of civil rights, as he did of the Japanese-Americans during and after World War II.

Please inform yourself about what positions I and others actually have taken.

Just betting that if y'all had been around in the days after Pearl Harbor, you would have been all for internment of the Japanese-Americans. After all, look how Muslim-Americans have been treated since 9-11.

Well, your position on the internment of U.S. citizens of Japanese heritage is one of the few reasonable positions you learned from R.C. Hoiles, John.

Too bad his, and your, ideology is so misguided about so many other things.

So one of Skelton's hero's was a racist? I'm shocked, shocked I say.

To add insult to the appalling injury committed against Japanese-Americans, a 1944 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Korematsu vs. U.S. sanctioned this outrage on the basis of public safety. In the 8 to 1 decision, all of the "justices" ruling in favor of concentration camps were FDR nominees. Interestingly, the lone dissent came from the one remaining Republican nominee to the court, Owen Roberts. The majority opinion was written by the Klu Klux Klan member and Roosevelt/New Deal ally Hugo Black.
