Sac town simply doesn't have the money (off court endorsements) nor the 'black culture' to get the best NBA players. Sac town was never in the running for Shaq, or King James or any of the top players. The 'black culture' thing sounds racist but many black players have spoken of it. One of reasons Carmelo Anthony left Denver was because it wasn't 'black' enough. Towns like Portland, Denver, Milwaukee, will never have championships because they can't attract the best players. In basketball, the individual players are far more important because there are only 5 players on the court at a time, unlike baseball with 9 and football with 11. The reason I'm pointing out the above problems is because Sacramento won't 'support' a half assed team for long. The reason fans don't go to the games in Sacramento it because knowledgeable fans know they don't have a chance to win a championship not that the arena isn't new. What brings fans to the stadium is a winning team. Not a team that plays 400 ball for decades on end. Only a winning team will be able to support this tax payer expenditure.
Yeh, the Cubs are the exception, but Chicago isn't a backwater town.

Deborah,

Since I was at the press conference, and I am reporting on what the group said and presented, this is not an editorial.
I've followed Sacramento's 13-year saga trying to get a new arena, and written about it just as long.

A few days after Mayor Johnson's ill-fated September 4, 2013 press conference to announce the backroom deal for a union Project Labor Agreement on the new Sacramento Kings Arena, I produced a document "Eight Steps to Alleviate Taxpayer and Contractor Outrage About Project Labor Agreement on Planned New Sacramento Kings Arena" and began circulating it. Here is a link to it:

http://laborissuessolutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Eight-Steps-on-PLA-to-Avert-Public-Vote-on-Sacramento-Kings-Arena.pdf

The Sacramento City Council never voted on the Project Labor Agreement. In fact, the public does not have access to the Project Labor Agreement! Everything positive that has been said in the news media about this amazing union deal has come from press releases and prepared statements. All we know is that top construction union officials are thrilled about it, and perhaps that is all we need to know.

"this new player is on behalf of the taxpayers and citizens of Sacramento" -- Did this come directly from a press release? It is a completely subjective assessment and belongs only in an editorial, not in a news story. and I haven't even gotten to the second sentence.
