200 years ago, 90% of Americans worked in agriculture. Now, fewer than 2% can produce more than enough food. As you wrote, technology and automation are now making fewer workers NECESSARY, not just in manufacturing, but in information, service, and entertainment.

If we can produce all we need (more than we need, actually) with fewer people working, WHY do we need “more jobs”?

Should we create ” make work” jobs and get people out WASTING RESOURCES just so they will feel “useful” ? When the railroads did that, they called it featherbedding, and that was not a complement. (Don’t bother, we all know it was the “swaggering unions” to blame)
