LA has a very expansive metro rail and commuter rail system, its just that the system is not very dense because LA is so sprawling. But even this problem is currently being fixed. copy and paste this in a new tab :

not so transit-deprived, is it?

On the contrary, there is simply no comparison LA and Houston. Houston opened its first, and currently only, light rail line 10 years ago, and it is almost completely street running, making it no better than a bus. (No Houston commuter rail system yet.) Most of LA's 88 miles of metro track run underground, elevated or on their own right of ways. Needless to say the commuter trains travel at high speeds on their 388 miles of track.
