Bee: Tax Pledge An Abdication!
Steven Greenhut: In an editorial today, the Sacramento Bee, which leans Left, endorsed Democratic Assemblywoman Alyson Huber for the Sacramento outskirts district that was expected to be Republican. They like her independent streak. Translation: They like that Huber is a Democrat who can be counted on to support her party when it matters and to act independently when it doesn’t matter — i.e., on throwaway votes that can be used to burnish her moderate image given the demographics of the district. The Bee’s funniest line: “But like too many other Republicans [GOP challenger Jack] Sieglock has abdicated a fundamental duty of office by signing an ideological pledge vowing that he will not raise taxes under any circumstances.” Nothing the big-government types like more than someone who is willing to raise taxes. Bottom line: The Bee prefers Huber, who is more likely to raise taxes than Sieglock, who has vowed not to raise them. Not sure who the Bee endorsement helps in this district!
