Can liberty in America be saved in 2014?

What will Liberty look like in 2014?

And no, it’s not a car.

200px-Locke_treatises_of_government_page

Liberty is something we often hear about, but isn’t exactly a topic of discussion at dinner parties. If we don’t really know what liberty is, how will we know when it is taken away, or if it is being taken away? Unfortunately, it often takes tyranny to make liberty more precious.

The purpose of liberty is to allow human life to flourish. Are we flourishing in California and the rest of America in 2013? What will liberty look like in 2014?

Are Americans prepared to fight for liberty?

Government serves the people

John Locke, a 17th century English philosopher and physician, regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers, said government is morally obliged to serve people, namely by protecting life, liberty, and property. He explained the principle of checks and balances to limit government power. He favored representative government and a rule of law. He denounced tyranny. Locke insisted that when government violates individual rights, people may legitimately rebel.

Locke said the only legitimate governments are those that have the consent of the people. Therefore, any government that rules without the consent of the people can, in theory, be overthrown.

These views were most fully developed in Locke’s famous “Second Treatise Concerning Civil Government.”

Locke said that if, either through an abuse of power or an impermissible change, these governing bodies cease to represent the people and instead represent either themselves or some foreign power, the people may–and indeed should–rebel against their government and replace it with one that will remember its trust.

“All men are naturally in a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of Nature, without asking leave or depending upon the will of any other man,” said Locke.

What Locke identified are the three but interconnected keystones of a society of free men: Liberty, Rule of Law, and Legislative Power by consent of the governed.

The people work for the government

Americans are burdened by a labyrinth of government policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Our federal government, once limited to basic core functions, now dominates virtually every area of American life. States, local governments and municipalities, and private businesses are increasingly overwhelmed by federal programs and influence. And as government expands its influence, our liberties recede.

The Left has been engaged in a century-long attack on the first principles of America, the Constitution, and the culture that supports liberty and freedom. However, the Left, steeped in ideology and control, always eventually oversteps, and has done so once again.  The recklessness of government, and the arrogance of officials, appear to have finally awakened a sleeping giant, in a nation that has been too long asleep. Many Americans have been jolted awake and are beginning to recognize the imperative to save our Republic.

Compared to the Founding era, more and more power is now being centralized in the national government. Today, for example, many policies that affect local public schools are made in Washington. As creeping centralization slowly overcomes the Constitution’s federal design, the national government has begun to restrict the freedom of religion that is an indispensable element of the American founding.

The Constitution, the supreme law of the United States, is under assault. First Amendment speech rights are being challenged by Congress. Some members of Congress want to limit the definition of the press to only those who work for large, established news outlets. They want alternative media and bloggers quieted.  Yet the First Amendment is very clear: Congress cannot interfere with an individual’s religion or speech. It cannot restrict a citizen’s communication with others to form community by worship, publishing, gathering together or petitioning the government.

President Obama and the Constitution

In 2013, President Barack Obama targeted Second Amendment gun ownership rights, and tried to impose sweeping federal gun control legislation. It failed, but he and the Left have made it very clear, they will attempt this again. Yet the Second Amendment guarantees the right of citizens to keep their own weapons.

One of the most egregious centralizations of power in U.S. history was ushered with President Obama’s health care overhaul in 2010. The law dictates what patients must buy, what insurance companies must offer, orders employers to provide health care coverage for employees, and and what the insurance must cover. Obamacare offers no way out, and no choice. This is a staggering loss of liberty.

Religious freedom under assault

“Religious freedom requires that the government does not interfere with religious faith and the charitable works it inspires,” the Heritage Foundation explained. “If a government is truly limited, friction with religious institutions and individuals will be rare. Of course, occasionally, tensions between faith and state may arise even under a limited government. The Founders counted on these tensions to keep the state in check.”

While we still have religious freedoms in America, the Left continually wages attacks on religion, and specifically Christianity. And they do it legislatively.

Attacks on the Boy Scouts of America are based on the Scouts’ inclusion of religion in their scouting practices and oath.

Public schools across the country are no longer allowing school facilities to be used by groups with religious affiliation.

Catholics have come under assault for standing their ground on the Obamacare contraception mandate. Religious employers are going to be forced into providing contraception, abortions, and sterilization procedures to their employees.

A judge recently ruled that a bakery owner violated the law when he refused to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding.

As government grows, liberty decreases

It was Thomas Jefferson who warned, “The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases. The natural progress of things is for liberty to yeild, and government to gain ground.”

Jefferson also had plenty to say on liberty: “Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.”

What will you do to save and restore liberty in 2014?

Liberty will be fine if CWD posters put into action meaningful solutions instead of sitting on their hands in hand dug bunkers.

Yes Queegy, it’s all up to us here at CWD. The fate of liberty is in our hands. All we have to do is enact “meaningful solutions” amongst ourselves and presto-chango, liberty will reign.

2014 is just a few days old but already we have a candidate for stupidest comment of the year.

Can liberty be saved in 2014? Short answer: No.

    Why?

The American people have lost our roots in history and delegated full authority and control over our lives to domestic rulers and oligarchs who govern only in their own self-interest and in the interest of their fellow elites. The disease has spread from the Federal level to the local level. Lying has become an accepted business practice in our highest political offices today. And it goes unpunished. In fact, it’s rewarded. Basically, the American people have willfully allowed our system to be hijacked. The American spirit is dead and gone. We have what amounts to be the obvious makings of a police state. 2 sets of laws. The examples are so numerous. Massive checkpoint presence on New Year’s Eve. Pulling over hundreds of thousands of law-abiding innocent motorists following all traffic laws and regulations under the guise of keeping us ‘safe’. NSA collecting your phone and email data under the guise of keeping us ‘safe’. Domestic drone rollouts in the works under the guise of keeping us ‘safe’. Digital license plates on deck under the guise of keeping us ‘safe’. License plate scanners used by cops under the guise of keeping us ‘safe’. And the American people just roll over like lapdogs and accept it. If any of this stuff were placed on a ballot for the vote of the people it would all lose by a 70% to 30% margin. All of it. That’s why you’ll never get the chance to vote on it. Your rulers will decide. And money determines who your rulers are. The biggest campaign treasure chest wins 98% of the time. Some incumbents (ie. Feinstein) don’t even bother debating their opponents when running for reelection. lol. They don’t even have to pretend anymore. It’s all about the money. And you know where that money comes from, don’t you? lol.

So I think the notion of ‘liberty’ as our founding fathers defined is like a memory of an old friend who has passed on. We just aren’t that same country or group of people.

So I enter 2014 with no great expectations.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

(I welcome and invite counterarguments for discussion. But please put a lid on personal attacks or snark. Thanks).

Your repeated snarky and caustic remarks toward other posters brings no value to a discussion board. It’s obvious you want to incite an online fight. I won’t engage because it destroys the intent of civil board discussion. I have too much respect for the other posters and for the board operator to do that. But maybe it’s time for the moderator to step in and tell you to pipe down. When you’re in somebody elses house behave in a decent manner.

I’m not surprised that you’d define personal demeaning remarks directed at other posters as ‘civil’.

If Queeg has a difference of opinion or argument with the facts I communicated in my comment – I welcome and invite his point of view.

But he makes a point of making it personal as if to pick a fight. It’s become a habit of sorts. Nobody wants a board like that. This is a news discussion board. Not an insult board.

Katy is right; at the end of the day, our fate resides in us. If we let government continue to grow and rob us of our freedoms, we will have let it happen and deserve what we get. If on the other hand we take steps to reverse the march to tyranny, we will recover what we once had and are losing rapidly.

LIC and Katy are both correct in their perspectives on liberty, and the government RAGWUS feeders have shown that they have no desire to release their ever growing power to dictate the day to day routine of all Americans, and many non-American people around the world.

I understand you are addicted to other people hard work Steals, but liberty is under assault in this nation, but since you are a part of the system it’s all good in your mind.

With less than 5% of the worlds population the United States has close to 30% of the worlds prisoners, and a fool like you wants to argue that enlightened and educated citizens are “paranoid” about their loss of liberty.

There are many who love the Supreme leader more than love liberty…the great one just increased Federal pay like a good Fascist. He wants their unquestioned support for the balance of his term. All we need is a good crisis and the supporters will be calling to extend his term….he will support that if the country needs his Divine guidance. He will call for a Federa bailout of gov t pensions,,,I suspect many of the posters will do acts required by other similar leaders to maintain their monthly stipends, and eternal salvation granted by the one chosen(by himself).

I just read that the California legislature passed about 800 new laws in 2013. lol. And those are just the new State laws. lol. How does that strike your liberty bell? lol. And unless you happen to be an illegal alien try to find a new one that rewards rather than punishes you. lol. With as many laws as they have on the books how is it possible for any living, breathing human not on life support to be in violation of one or two at any given moment? Do you notice that they never repeal laws – just add more?

My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing…….

Did you hear about the cops using drug detection swabs at DUI checkpoints in some major Ca cities over New Years? They swab your gum line then put the swab into a machine to check whether you smoked weed or used a host of other drugs in the previous few hours. lol. Apparently they aren’t making enough money off the drunks so they have to go after weed smokers too. lol. Right now it’s in the experimental stage and is administered only if the motorist consents. I can’t imagine someone who just smoked weed to volunteer for such a test, but I guess there are people that stupid out there. What’s next? A test for caffeine intoxication? People with a buzz from a few shots of expresso might be their next targets. lol. War on smokers. War on boozers. War on dopers. Why not a war on coffee drinkers? Why don’t the just force everybody to become a Mennonite? Don’t laugh. You were forced to join ObamaCare. And most Americans just rolled over.

Another good example of how our liberty bell has been defiled and muted is Fast and Furious.

On December 18 one of the 2000 assault rifles purchased illegally from US gun stores by operatives of the ATF, illegally transported across the the US border into Mexico and illegally handed to members of dangerous Mexican drug cartels was found to be used in the murder of 5 people in the Mexican seaside resort of Penasco.

The authorities KNOW who sold the guns to the operatives. The authorities KNOW who transported the guns across the international border. The authorities KNOW who gave the guns to the Mexican cartel members. The authorities KNOW who signed off on these illegal activities. Yet NO ONE has been fired, prosecuted or jailed.

What would happen to you if YOU tried to purchase a gun from a retail store illegally? What would happen to YOU if you transported an illegal assault weapon into Mexico and got caught? What would happen to YOU if you gave assault weapons to criminals which were later used to murder hundreds if not thousands of mostly innocent people? It’s called ‘Accessory to Murder’ and YOU would get charged the same as the one who committed the act.

This is what is meant by ‘2 sets of laws’. A truly civilized society does not permit such a thing. A truly civilized society promotes “equality under the law’. It is a symptom of a diseased culture. And it is the antithesis of ‘liberty’.

I don’t expect any of that to change. I expect it to only get worse. We see examples of this same thing, to one degree or another, constantly in the news. So it’s not an abberation. It’s becoming a common practice. That’s not “liberty”. Make no mistake about it.

“The Left has been engaged in a century-long attack on the first principles of America, the Constitution, and the culture that supports liberty and freedom.”

Sorry Katy but this claim is simplistic, bogus and misleading. The Right has been engaged in it’s own war against liberty for even longer. Abe Lincoln, the hallowed icon of the Republican Party, suspended Habeas Corpus, illegally deported a sitting Congressman to Canada, sent Federal troops to intimidate voters into supporting Republican candidates, instituted an illegal income tax, imposed a tyrannical military draft, jailed dozens of newspaper editors for daring to criticize him and illegally created the state of West Virginia. Oh, and he also waged an immoral total war of aggression against sovereign states which exercised their natural and constitutional right to secede from the government that they created.

The “Compassionate Conservatives” of the Republican Party support many infringements of our Natural Rights and defend existential threats to our liberty like perpetual warfare, the income tax, the Federal Reserve banking cartel, NSA meta spying, The Patriot Act, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the horrendous and failed drug war, chronic budget deficits, unsustainable national debt, the Military-Industrial Complex, constant monetary inflation, amnesty for illegal aliens, open borders immigration policy, Crony Capitalism, etc. I could go on at length but you get the point.

Both the left and the right are a menace to truth, liberty and a civilized society of truly limited government. If you have any desire to live in a world of tolerance, earned prosperity, privacy, dignity and individual freedom then you must oppose both The Left and The Right as well as the Tweedledum and TweedleDee Parties. The whole political/economic/academic/media establishment is rotten to the core. To regain our birthright of liberty we need to overthrow all of the Overlords, not just the Red Team faction.
