Maldonado Confirmed

Somehow, by some miracle, the California Legislature has confirmed Senator Abel Maldonado as Lieutenant Governor, ending five months of political drama and maneuvering that rivaled President Obama’s push for healthcare reform.

“Senator Maldonado is a model of post-partisanship, reaching across the aisle to improve education and strengthen public safety,” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said in this press release, apparently forgetting — like the legislators who dragged this whole sorry business on month after month — that as lieutenant governor, Maldonado is constitutionally prohibited from doing anything more than opening shopping malls, smiling gratuitously and exploring other open seats to run for.

What? Are you sure that’s not in the state constitution? Even the part about the shopping malls? Well, I’m sure it’s in the back somewhere…

Typical Arnold blather. He’s still living in 2006, when he was Herr Postpartisan and made the cover of Time magazine (is Time still even in print in 2010?). Since then, he’s crashed the state. This is an irrelevant appointment to a job that shouldn’t even exist.

That “post-partisanship” phrase sets you off, eh? Gee, he proposed working together, compromise and cooperation. You’d think he was advocating child abuse.

I probably agree with you about the Lite Governor job. However, I can’t help but wonder if you’d feel the same if he had appointed a “true” conservative.

Steve: I’ve always wanted to eliminate this post, even when Mike Curb held it. It’s useless. Get rid of it, and transfer the succession — if necessary — to the Secretary of State. Use the money saved to reduce the deficit. Not a lot of $$$, but something.
